A man was bitten in a shark attack on a scenic, remote beach 1,200 kilometres north of Perth, just days after locals were warned of an increased danger.

When the shark attack was reported around 11am on Monday, rescue workers rushed to Fourteen Mile Beach on the north-west coast of Western Australia.

They found a male victim who had been attacked by an unknown species of shark and took him to a care center in Coral Bay, about 40 kilometers north, for treatment.

A WA Country Health Service spokesman confirmed the victim was in a stable condition.

Authorities had previously issued a warning about sharks in the area just hours after a whale carcass was discovered off the coast of Point Cloates.

Parks and Wildlife officials advised beachgoers in the Point Cloates area to be cautious when entering the water as the carcass could attract sharks.

Swimmers near Fourteen Mile Beach are now also being urged to exercise “extra caution” near the shore and to “pay attention to any signage and beach closures.”

Just 10 minutes before the attack, a shark of an unknown species estimated to be 4 m long was spotted off the coast of Exmouth, according to SharkSmart.
