Two serious accidents on the same New Hampshire road are being investigated

There have been two accidents on Route 9 in Chesterfield in the past two weeks, one of them fatal. Community members said they are forced to take alternate routes to avoid potential dangers. “Route 9 is definitely getting more dangerous. Cars are driving way too fast. Just recently there was a really bad accident. People are still driving very recklessly. I’m nervous when I drive, especially when my kids are in the car,” said Jen Oliver. Route 9 runs right through Chesterfield, and some community members said the road is unavoidable at times. On Friday, police said they were called to a crash on Route 9 in which a car had crossed the double yellow line and collided head-on with another car. Both drivers were hospitalized, according to authorities. “These things come in waves. I wouldn’t call it normal. In the summer, traffic picks up quite a bit for us,” said Chesterfield police Lt. Lance Rouse. On a normal day, Rouse said, more than 12,000 cars drive through Chesterfield, most of them on Route 9. “It’s a fast-moving road. The road hasn’t changed much in 20 years. Driver behavior has,” Rouse said. “Speeding, illegal passing, tailgating, things like that. So we work with state police to prevent those head-on collisions and serious crashes and maintain a presence on Route 9.” Rouse said there have been more than 30 crashes since the beginning of 2024. Anyone with information on recent crashes on Route 9 is asked to contact Chesterfield police at 603-363-4233.
