Ground shutdown in effect at Atlanta airport as storms move through northern Georgia

Severe Weather Team 2 follows another round of storms over northern Georgia Thursday morning, with a risk of strong to severe storms.

Brian Monahan, Team 2 Severe Weather Meteorologist says another round of strong and severe storms will move toward northern Georgia and the Atlanta metro area on Thursday.

Devastating wind gusts and hail are the main consequences. Brief tornadoes remain possible.

A tornado watch has been issued for all of north Georgia until 1 p.m. The monitoring also includes Cleburne and Randolph counties in Alabama in the Channel 2 Action News viewing area.

Gilmer County Schools and Habersham County Schools will be closed Thursday. Union County Schools will go virtual for some students.

A ground stop was made at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

8:45 a.m.

Many roads are closed in Habersham County due to downed trees, power lines and flooding.

8:43 a.m.

A tree fell on top of a car on North Meadow Parkway in Roswell. No injuries were reported.

8:25 a.m.

In Fannin County, all lanes are blocked on SR 60 N at Young Stone Dr. due to road debris.

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Barrow, Bank, Clarke, Hall, Jackson and Madison counties until 8:45 a.m.

As the storms move through, a few counties have been removed from tornado watches.

In Hall County, approximately 2,760 Georgia Power customers are without power.

For Georgia EMC, there are 12,250 customers in North Georgia, 3,564 customers in Northeast Georgia and 2,235 customers without power.
