2 people arrested after north side robbery leads to shooting

INDIANAPOLIS – Two people were arrested after an alleged robbery turned into a shooting in north Indianapolis early Tuesday morning.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, detectives from the aggravated assault unit arrested 20-year-old David Tillman and a 17-year-old accomplice in connection with the reported robbery/shooting.

Just after 12:40 a.m. Tuesday, officers from the department’s North District responded to a report of a person shot in the 1600 block of College Avenue. When police arrived, they found a man on the sidewalk suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. The man was taken to a local hospital in serious but stable condition.

After the shooting, officers received a description of the suspects from witnesses at the scene, which was then radioed to other officers in the area.

The press release said investigators were able to review video footage of the incident, which allegedly shows a suspect “forcibly pulling a gun from the victim’s pocket.” The victim then attempted to get the gun back, and a struggle allegedly ensued when the second suspect jumped in. After the suspects gained control of the gun, the victim was allegedly shot.

During the investigation, police learned that the suspects had possibly been spotted entering a residence nearby. The news release said officers later identified them as the suspects after briefly opening the apartment door. Investigators were issued a search warrant for the apartment and the two suspects, identified as Tillman and the 17-year-old, were taken into custody.

Officials said a search of the apartment allegedly revealed the clothing the two men were wearing in the video of the incident, as well as a handgun and “several individually wrapped bags of narcotics.”

Tillman was arrested on preliminary charges of robbery and aggravated assault, as well as two Marion County warrants for violating probation. The press release states that the 17-year-old was also arrested.
