Police don’t know how dead baby ended up in Fresno backyard | YourCentralValley.com

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Fresno police investigators are trying to determine the identity of the baby found dead in a Fresno backyard Tuesday.

A resident in the 300 block of South Backer Avenue heard her dog barking outside and when she went to investigate, she found a dead baby lying there.

“This is not something we like to see, and that’s why we definitely want to get justice for the baby, whatever that may be,” said Fresno Police Sergeant Felipe Uribe.

Uribe said the baby does not belong to anyone in the household. The identity and whereabouts of the parents are unknown.

“We do not know the cause of the baby’s death and cannot yet classify it as a homicide,” said Sergeant Uribe.

On Tuesday morning, police cordoned off several blocks around the crime scene for the investigation.

“We have not identified the baby with any house nearby, so we don’t know if the body was unfortunately transported from one place to another by someone. So we have to go back a long way and work backwards, so to speak,” Uribe explained.

YourCentralValley.com spoke with a resident who has lived in the neighborhood for four decades. He says there has been an increase in gang activity in recent years, prompting him and his neighbors to install security cameras.

“We talk to neighbors and know that someone out there in the neighborhood has seen something or knows someone who knows something,” said Sergeant Uribe.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Fresno Police.
