Warning about harmful algae in Omaha Lake

Omaha authorities are warning the public about a dangerous spread of “toxic blue-green algae” in an area lake. Recently analyzed samples from Lake Candlewood indicate that total levels of microcystin exceed the limit of eight parts per billion, according to the Douglas County Health Department. Lake Candlewood is located in the Candlewood neighborhood on 120th Street near Rose Lane and Charles Street. The department explained that microcystin is a poison released by certain strains of blue-green algae. People are advised not to swim in the lake during the warning and to avoid contact with the water — “especially avoiding any activity that could lead to ingestion of the water,” officials said. Recreational boating and fishing are permitted, the department said. Officials also advised against allowing pets into the water or drinking from the lake.
