‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ actor attacked by shark

Tamayo Perry, a surfer, lifeguard and actor who played roles in “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” and “Blue Crush,” died Sunday after being attacked by a shark in Hawaii, the BBC reported. He was 49.

According to the Associated Press, Honolulu Ocean Safety and the city’s emergency services responded to a 911 call about a man who had apparently suffered multiple shark bites near Mālaekahana Beach on Oahu’s North Shore around 1 p.m. Perry was subsequently brought to shore by jet ski by paramedics and pronounced dead at the scene.

Perry was “a lifeguard loved by all,” Kurt Lager, deputy director of Honolulu Ocean Safety, said during a press conference, according to AP.

“He’s very well known on the North Shore. He’s a world-renowned professional surfer,” Lager said. “Tamayo’s personality was infectious and as much as people liked him, he liked everyone else even more.”

Perry has also worked as an actor, having small roles in the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film, On Stranger Tides (2011), as well as in Blue Crush (2002) and Hawaii Five-O (2011).

He has worked as a lifeguard since July 2016, the AP reported, and has been a professional surfer for over a decade.

Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi called Perry’s death a “tragic loss” during a press conference, according to the BBC. “Tamayo was a legendary and highly respected fisherman,” he said, adding that he “grew up here” and was “just a great member of our Ocean Safety team.”

According to Ocean Safety, shark warning signs were put up in the area following the attack.

He leaves behind his wife Emilia Perry.
