One dead and five injured in shooting in downtown St. Louis

ST. LOUIS — One man is dead and at least five other people were shot in downtown St. Louis. The shooting occurred at about 2:30 a.m. on June 23 at the corner of 10th and Market streets. A spokesman for the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department held a news conference less than 30 minutes ago and explained that officers from the Fourth Precinct were already on duty downtown when they heard several gunshots.

When they arrived, they found several people who had been shot. More victims then arrived at the hospital. The dead man is believed to be 26 years old, and another victim is in critical condition.

Most of the victims are in their early 20s. Homicide investigators believe a fight broke out between a group of girls, which escalated when others joined in and ended in gunfire. At least one gun was recovered from the scene, but it is unclear whether that weapon was used in the shooting.

The public affairs director added that an officer was assaulted during the incident. The person believed to be responsible for the attack was taken into custody and charged with assault on a police officer.
