According to the police department, Newark police shot and wounded a man at a gas station early Friday morning who was brandishing a replica firearm.

The shooting occurred around 4:30 a.m. Friday at the Chevron gas station in the 6100 block of Jarvis Avenue, police said.

The officers were called to the station due to reports of a disturbance. When they arrived, the man was brandishing a replica firearm, police said. One of the officers who responded to the man then shot him.

The man was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The gas station’s surveillance cameras captured the shooting and show the man did not conduct himself appropriately, police said. Newark police said they had multiple contacts with the man before Friday’s shooting.
