Rantoul man arrested in connection with deadly April shooting

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) – The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office announced a Rantoul man is now in custody in connection with a fatal shooting last month.

Authorities discovered that two Rantoul men, 24-year-old Jonalberto Guadalupe Sanchez and 32-year-old Argenis Rincon, were arguing over a previous relationship. On April 15, the two agreed to meet on the edge of town, near the intersection of County Roads 3200 North and 1800 East.

This encounter resulted in Guadalupe Sanchez being shot in the upper body. After the sheriff’s office and Rantoul police arrived at the scene, Guadalupe Sanchez was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital, where coroner Stephen Thuney said he died of a gunshot wound to the chest.

Just before 12:45 a.m. Wednesday, Rincon was arrested at the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office and taken to the Champaign County Correctional Center. He was accused of murder.

The Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate this incident. Anyone with further information is asked to call the Investigations Division at 217-384-1213.
