UPDATED: Peaceful end to Carrolls Lane incident that escalated into standoff

In an update posted on the Rockland Police Department’s Facebook page on June 15, police announced that Samuel Ward, 23, of Rockland, was arrested on Friday afternoon, June 14, following a standoff on Carrolls Lane.

Local police officers were called to the area after reports that several shots had been fired in very rapid succession. These shots came through the roof of the house and no one was injured.

“At around 3 p.m., the man left the house with several rifle magazines and apparently attempted to access a rifle case near the front door,” the FB post said. “Officers approached the man and arrested him without incident or serious injury.”

Ward was issued with multiple arrest warrants and was charged with reckless handling of a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm by an unauthorized person and discharging a firearm in the vicinity of a dwelling or building.

Officers executed a search warrant on the home and seized several firearms and suspected drugs. Additional charges are expected. As of this posting, Ward remains in the Knox County Jail on $25,000 bail.

ROCKLAND – What began to turn into a stalemate in Rockland on Friday afternoon ended peacefully after about 90 to 120 minutes.

Rockland police responded to a report of multiple shots fired in the Carrolls Lane area early in the afternoon. Multiple Rockland officers rushed to the scene with additional assistance from the Knox County Sheriff’s Office and Marine Patrol.

According to Police Chief Tim Carroll, the incident began after an argument between three people at 10 Carrolls Lane became so heated that one of the residents grabbed a gun and fired shots. No one was injured and the other two people quickly left the home.

After determining that the shooting complaint was genuine, officers evacuated surrounding homes and established a perimeter. They made multiple attempts to contact the suspect but were unable to reach him.

Carrolls Lane and Clarendon Street were eventually closed to traffic at 2.50pm. An ambulance was requested to be deployed to the area.

At approximately 3:04 p.m., the suspect left the house and turned himself in to police, but complained of pain in his leg that was unrelated to the incident, although no visible injuries were found. While in custody, emergency medical services transported him to Pen Bay Medical Center for the pain and for a general examination.

Search warrants have been issued and police will be looking for answers to questions like, “How many guns are in the house?” and “What did the bullets hit?”
