Mass shooting at Oakland County paddling pool appears to have been random, police say

ROCHESTER HILLS, Michigan. – At least nine people were shot in a shooting at a wading pool in Oakland County on Saturday; police are describing the incident as random.

The shootings occurred around 6 p.m. Saturday at the Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad at 1585 E. Auburn Road in Rochester Hills.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said they are trying to determine how many people were shot. He believes there could be nine or 10 victims. He said at least one victim was 8 years old.

The victims suffered various injuries and are being treated in several local hospitals. At least one victim has already been discharged.

Police appeared to have cornered the gunman in a Shelby Township trailer park Saturday night, but it’s unclear what the situation is. A large police presence was on the scene. Bouchard said the suspect is known to police.

Bouchard said the gunman fired 28 shots and reloaded multiple times. Police have seized a handgun.

Bouchard said witnesses told police the shooter drove up in a vehicle, got out and started shooting. It appears to have been a random incident.

The Oakland County Sheriff issued an emergency warning to avoid the area and seek shelter near Spencer Park. According to Rochester Hills police, no incidents occurred at that park.
