The 32-year-old was released from prison in December 2023 after serving 8.5 years of a 10-year sentence for the second-degree murder of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard, in 2015.

The investigation into the case revealed that Blanchard suffered from Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a mental disorder that occurs when an abusive caregiver intentionally causes illness or injury to a person under their care.

To escape this abuse, Blanchard introduced Dee Dee’s mother to her then-boyfriend Nicholas Godejohn, who was serving a life sentence for first-degree murder.

She is also the subject of a Lifetime docuseries in which she offers further insight into her life over the past few years. During her time in prison, for example, Blanchard revealed that she had the opportunity to explore her sexuality.

In the second episode of her Lifetime show Gypsy Rose: Life after prisonBlanchard said: “A big part of being a woman is learning to come to terms with your own sexuality, and that was something I didn’t have to do for years.

“For a long time I questioned my own sexuality because as a teenager or young adult I felt attracted to girls and was able to experiment with it in prison.

“I think I’ve kissed more girls than boys,” she said, giggling.

What did Gypsy Rose Blanchard’s mother do to her?

As mentioned above, Blanchard was a victim of Munchausen syndrome by proxy through her mother.

Her mother claimed that Blanchard had suffered from various fake health problems since childhood, including muscular dystrophy, asthma and leukemia.

Blanchard underwent unnecessary surgeries and treatments and was told she needed a wheelchair.

Since then, she has expressed her regret over her mother’s murder.

“I really wanted to get out of that situation,” she previously told People.

“No one will ever hear me say that I’m glad she’s dead or that I’m proud of what I did. I regret it every day.”

“She didn’t deserve that. She was a sick woman and unfortunately I wasn’t educated enough to see that. She deserved to be where I am now: sitting in prison and causing criminal behavior.”

Is Gypsy Rose Blanchard married?

Blanchard’s relationship status has become a much-discussed part of her post-prison life.

While incarcerated, Blanchard became engaged to Ken Urker, who had contacted her through a pen pal program, but their engagement soon ended.

In 2022, Blanchard married Louisiana teacher Ryan Anderson in a prison ceremony with no guests present. She then made headlines in January 2024 by bragging about her sex life with Anderson.

“Ryan, don’t listen to the haters. I love you and you love me,” she wrote on Instagram. “We don’t owe anyone anything. Our family is what matters. … I love you.”

Then she launched a thousand memes announcing, “Also they’re jealous because you upset me every night…yes I said it, the D is for fire.”

However, three months after her release, she filed for divorce.

Speaking to Extra, Anderson recalled that their breakup was due to an argument and that he hadn’t seen her “since that night.”

“One minute we were married and the next we weren’t,” he said.

“It was like I was saying, ‘I’m going to my parents’ for the weekend,’ and then suddenly they said, ‘I’m not coming back.'”

According to People, Blanchard posted on Facebook: “My husband and I are unfortunately going through a separation right now and I have moved back in with my parents.

“I have the support of my family and friends to help me get through this. I’m learning to listen to my heart. Right now I need time to figure out who I am.”

Blanchard then obtained a temporary restraining order against Anderson.

She also ordered Anderson to pay her temporary and long-term spousal support because Blanchard “is indigent and the defendant is able to pay and is not at fault for the divorce.”

Since her split from Anderson, Blanchard has rekindled her romance with Ken Urker, her prison pen pal, but she claims Urker was not the reason her marriage failed.

Blanchard told US Weekly: “I called Ken two weeks before my wedding. Ken always raised me to never let go of my feelings, but I put them aside to do what was best for my marriage.”

“This was a point of contention throughout the story, but I did not leave Ryan for Ken.

“We’re trying to take it slow at the moment. As for kids, yes, I definitely want kids at some point. I think I’ll be a good mother. I think Ken would be a wonderful father, and we’ll see what the future holds for us.”
