Jon Rahm a doubt for US Open after withdrawal from LIV Golf Houston

Jon Rahm became the second high-profile LIV golfer to withdraw from his Houston event after Louis Oosthuizen, who was replaced by Wade Ormsby before the second round of the tournament.

Unlike the Stinger GC captain, the Spaniard played the first six holes of his second round, but a foot injury kept him out of the Houston Golf Club event – and it calls into question his participation in next week’s US Open.

Rahm started the day at three under, and that’s where he finished after par on each of his six completed holes. Assuming he does not return for the third round, his withdrawal means his streak of seven successive top 10 finishes since his major move to the tour will now end.

While this is an immediate concern, Rahm will also be mindful of the potential implications of participating in the US Open next week. Rahm was Major champion three years ago and, despite disappointing results at the Masters and PGA Championship this year, he is one of the favorites to lift the trophy.

While it’s unclear how serious the injury is, the fact that Rahm had to pull out must be a cause for concern with the third Major of the year now less than a week away.

The first sign that Rahm was suffering from his injury came in the first round when, on his fifth hole of the day, he hit a short iron and, upon impact, was in visible pain as he attempted to clear it. It was later reported that the problem was caused by a cut between his toes.

The withdrawal means Rahm, who is one of 12 LIV Golf players heading to No. 2 Pinehurst for next week’s Major, has played just 24 holes since missing the cut at the PGA Championship almost a month ago.

As Legion Captain XIII withdrew mid-round, this means he will not be replaced for the remainder of the day. This will not affect the team’s numerical score, since only three scores count in the second round. However, for the final round, all four players’ scores count towards the final tally, meaning that if he does not return, he will be replaced.
