1 dead and 1 seriously injured after fall on construction site on the south side

One worker was killed and another was left in critical condition after falling about nine stories from scaffolding at the construction site of a building for UChicago Medicine, officials said.

Shortly after 12:15 p.m. Thursday, a construction worker fell from a scaffold in high winds and landed about nine stories below, Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said. A second worker also fell to the ground and is in critical condition at UChicago Medicine, just steps from the construction site.

Officials said workers were building a new cancer research center in the 5600 block of South Maryland Avenue.
