Stolen mail in stolen car: Police arrest former postal worker

Stolen mail was found in a stolen car. Cobb County police say the woman driving the car used to work for the U.S. Postal Service.

Officers discovered a stolen vehicle in a parking lot on Spring Road. A short time later, they saw a woman, identified as 39-year-old Ebony Williams, enter the vehicle.

“It was a rental car. The rental company had reported the car stolen because the person who rented the car did not intentionally return the vehicle,” said Cobb County Police Sgt. Eric Smith.

Officers looked inside and found letters addressed to various people and companies scattered throughout the vehicle. None were directed at Williams. However, she had a connection to the letters.

According to court documents, Williams “admitted to being a former employee of the United States Postal Service, where she worked as a mail carrier.”

“It is believed that during this time she took mail to be delivered and some of it included checks which she kept for her own purposes,” Sgt Schmied said.

Police say this is by no means a victimless crime as there are dozens of people who never received the checks that were theirs.

“I just want to highlight the efforts of these officers to locate the stolen car and the person responsible for it and then determine that this person is also connected to other crimes,” said Sgt. Schmied.

Williams was booked into the Cobb County Jail on charges of theft and forgery. Because it involves stolen mail, USPS inspectors are also involved.
