Will Messi play the Inter Miami vs Atlanta match? Last status update

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Inter Miami star Lionel Messi will return to action Wednesday night against Atlanta United, coach Tara Martino announced Tuesday.

Messi’s longtime friends and teammates Luis Suárez and Sergio Busquets will also play. The trio will be in the lineup again after staying home in South Florida and not playing in Inter Miami’s 2-1 win in Vancouver last Saturday.

Inter Miami play two matches this week, the second being Saturday at home against last-place St. Louis City, before Messi joins the Argentina national team for the Copa América next month.

Argentina is reportedly training at Inter Miami, so Messi won’t have to go far to reunite with the reigning 2021 Copa América and 2022 World Cup champions. But Messi’s status for Saturday’s match could be uncertain.

“The idea is to have both games, but we have to play tomorrow’s game first to think about our health,” Martino said.

“We are clear that Leo will play the match on Saturday and then he will play with the national team. The good thing about all this is that the Argentinian national team decided to settle here in the USA, especially in Miami, the matches take place (in the country) and he doesn’t need to travel a lot, so it’s good for him, too.”

Inter Miami leads the MLS Eastern Conference with 34 points from 10 wins, four draws and two losses. Suárez is tied for second in MLS with 11 goals scored, while Messi is third with 10 goals scored and a league-leading 12 assists this season.

Messi spends weekend at Inter Miami training, watches son play

While Inter Miami received goals from Robert Taylor and Leo Campana to win 2-1 in Vancouver, Messi and Suárez spent the weekend training at Inter Miami and watching their sons play in the Inter Miami International Youth Cup on the stadium pitch.

Messi was often seen sitting in the shade with Suárez, while many children participating in the tournament vied for his attention as he walked or rode a golf cart around the Inter Miami campus.

“Well, maybe it’s a part that allows him in Miami, in the United States, to be able to transform for a few moments into a normal person. And it also shows his commitment to his sons’ club, his commitment towards the club, for being the host of this tournament,” Martino said of Messi. “The truth is that in a way they are things that make him very happy because, as I said before, they bring him closer to a normal person.”

Messi will begin training with Argentina next week and will play two warm-up matches before the start of the Copa America on June 9 and 14. Messi and Argentina will begin play in the Copa America on June 20 in Atlanta.
