Students arrested at PSU protest on Thursday, campus police chief hospitalized

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Follow Protests at Portland State University on Thursday eveningThe school said the campus police chief had been hospitalized and that several students were among those arrested.

According to PSU, during the protests a group marched to the Richard & Maurine Neuberger Center and protesters chained themselves to the doors for the second time.

The chained protesters were asked to leave, but they refused, the school said, and both campus and Portland police then arrived at the scene.

A total of seven arrests were made. According to the school, three of those arrested were current students.

During the event, PSU President Ann Cudd said in a statement that physical force was used against students and that campus police chief Willie Halliburton had to be taken to the hospital at one point because he suffered a “medical emergency.” No further information about the emergency was given.

In her statement, Cudd also called for an end to the protests, saying, “This is not a campus atmosphere that any of us at Portland State University can sustain.”

Cudd added that she has worked to connect with protesters and meet with community members and student groups to reach an agreement on the demands of the Associated Students of Portland State University.
