Glenview police arrest Glenbrook South student Marko Niketic in fatal crash – NBC Chicago

A Northbrook man was arrested on a variety of charges, including reckless homicide and aggravated driving under the influence causing death, after he caused a crash that killed a 17-year-old Glenbrook South High School student, police said .

According to police, 21-year-old Taeyoung Kim was arrested Friday evening for the following alleged crimes:

  • Ruthless murder
  • Aggravated driving under the influence resulted in death, aggravated driving under the influence resulted in serious bodily injury and reckless driving
  • DUI, speeding and DUI with a blood alcohol concentration over 0.08
  • Drug-related driving under the influence, improper lane use, and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident

According to authorities, the accident occurred just after 11 p.m. Sunday in the 1200 block of East Lake Avenue near Meadow Lane in Glenview. Kim, who was behind the wheel of a Ford Mustang when he hit the Mercedes that Marko Niketic was driving, police said.

Kim was driving “recklessly at a high rate of speed” when he struck the 17-year-old’s car near East Lake Avenue and Meadow Lane.

Marko died from his injuries at the scene of the accident, the police said. According to authorities, both vehicles sustained significant damage and came to rest on the other side of the road after crashing into a wooden fence.

Marko’s passenger and Kim and his passenger were taken to a nearby hospital, police said. According to authorities, Kim was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Both passengers in each vehicle were last seen in critical condition.

According to Glenbrook South High School, the accident occurred just days before Marko’s prom and three weeks before his graduation.

Throughout the week, groups of emotional family and friends visited the crash site and many placed candles, photos and bouquets of flowers at the scene.

“He’s one of those people, you meet him and he shines. Most sincere person ever,” said friend Preston Shute, holding back tears. “He had a lot of things going on. I can’t really process it.”
