Elwood man dies in construction accident | Local News

ANDERSON — An Elwood man died in a construction accident in Noblesville Monday when a trench collapsed on the 14600 block of Umber Avenue.

Coroner Jeff Jellison confirmed that 21-year-old utility worker Shawn Young died as a result of the accident.

The Noblesville Fire Department responded to the scene and found Young buried on his shoulders and unresponsive.

An autopsy will be performed at the Hamilton County Mortuary to determine the cause and manner of death.

Rescuers had to secure the sides of the trench with wooden panels to prevent further collapse.

Department Chief Trevor Hash said Young was installing a water main when the trench, which was about 8 feet deep and 4 feet wide, collapsed.

Young installed the water line for an on-site car wash.

Hash said it took rescuers about two hours to free the man from the ditch.

The Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration will investigate what caused the trench collapse, he said.
