Man drowns in canoe accident on East Lake

HALIFAX – A man drowned after a canoeing accident in Halifax on Mother’s Day, officials said.

Halifax police received a 911 call around 10:58 a.m. to a report of a capsized canoe with multiple people in the water near the boat ramp at 47 White Island Road on Sunday.

“Upon arrival, Halifax police and firefighters found three individuals, including an adult and two children, safely out of the water,” said Beth Stone, a spokeswoman for Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz. “A second adult was reported missing beneath the surface of the water.”

Halifax first responders contacted Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office. Halifax firefighters also requested assistance from the Plymouth County Technical Rescue Dive Team and several local fire departments.

Additionally, Halifax requested assistance from the Plymouth County Technical Rescue Dive Team and several local fire departments.

“At approximately 12:42 p.m., the dive team located the male victim,” Stone said. “He was transported to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital where he was pronounced dead.”

The man’s identity is not being released at this time.
