New Buffalo and Bangor Receive Awards for Fluoridation

The cities of New Buffalo and Bangor are the recipients of the 2023 Community Water Fluoridation 50 Year Award for their efforts to protect residents’ dental health through the water system.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced that the awards will be presented this year to seven municipalities across the state. They are presented by the American Dental Association, the Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The recipients are recognized for their ability to consistently maintain the fluoride content of their drinking water to prevent tooth decay in adults and children. The award is given to communities that have demonstrated excellence in water fluoridation for 50 consecutive years, starting in 1973. The recipients are Bangor and New Buffalo.

Allegan, Blissfield, Boyne City, Manchester and Portage also received awards.
