1 dead and 6 injured in mass shooting in crowded park in northern New York state

One person is dead and six injured after a mass shooting in a crowded park in upstate New York over the weekend.

Rochester police said officers responded to the incident at Maplewood Park around 6:20 p.m. Sunday.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found several people with gunshot wounds. The victims were taken to the hospital by ambulance and some by private vehicle, police said.

The deceased victim is in his twenties, but police would not release the gender or other identifying information until the family is notified.

One of the injured is in critical condition, RPD Captain Greg Bello said in a press conference.

Bello said police could not yet confirm that there was only one shooter because the investigation was still in its early stages.

“We’re working our way through, starting to gather evidence and looking for different videos,” Bello said.

He said police were aware of the videos circulating on social media but asked individuals to send them directly to RPD instead.

Bello said the incident, in which a gunman opened fire on a “Sunday afternoon when everyone was outside barbecuing and having fun,” was “incredibly unacceptable in our society.”

Rochester Mayor Malik Evans echoed his sentiments.

“What happened today is a tragedy. Early in the day, at 6:20 p.m., when families were out having fun in the park, this tragic shooting occurred,” Evans said at a news conference.

Anyone with video or information can email [email protected] or call RPD at (585) 428-7157 or Crime Stoppers at (585) 423-9300.

The investigations are still ongoing.
