Bhopal: A three-month-long investigation has brought to light a gruesome crime in MP’s Rewa district – the rape and murder of a nine-year-old girl by her 13-year-old brother and a shocking cover-up by her mother and two sisters to “protect the only son in the family”. When the mother saw the victim, she was indeed still breathing. But she stood by and did nothing as the 13-year-old continued to choke her until her last breath, police said. The family claimed she died of a snake bite, but police investigations brought to light the disturbing truth. The youth, his mother and two elder sisters – aged 17 and 18 – were arrested. Police say the boy had watched porn before turning on his sister. The incident took place on the night of April 24 in a village about 70 km from the district headquarters Rewa. The next morning, the family called the police and said that the nine-year-old girl was lying dead at home. Police examined the crime scene with forensic experts and had the body autopsied, which confirmed rape and strangulation. Rewa SP Vivek Singh immediately set up a commission of inquiry to look into the case. During the investigation, police found no evidence of any break-in or forced entry. No stranger was seen leaving the house. Also, investigators found that even though such a brutal crime had taken place in the house, no one seemed to have seen or heard anything. Based on technical evidence and tips from informant networks, more than 50 suspects were questioned. Eventually, police started questioning family members and cracks started showing. The victim’s brother, mother and elder sisters kept changing their statements, police said. Their suspicions deepened, police started cross-examining the family members and finally they broke down and confessed the horrific truth, an official said. The accused told police that the victim and her older brother had slept together that night. He watched an “obscene film” and then raped her. Shocked and traumatized, she said she would tell her parents. In a panic, he strangled her but then went to his mother and confessed. The mother ran to the siblings’ room and found her still breathing but when the boy saw this, he strangled her again in front of his mother, police said. During this commotion, the two older sisters woke up and also learned about it but remained silent, police said. The four accused conspired to move the body elsewhere and tried to mislead the investigation but were caught, police said.
