Suspected stalker arrested in Germany

BERLIN – German police have arrested an American man suspected of stalking Taylor Swift and threatening her and her partner on social media as he tried to attend the pop star’s concert in the western city of Gelsenkirchen, they said Thursday.

The 34-year-old, who had a ticket, was identified at the entrance to the venue before the concert on Wednesday and taken into custody after initial investigations could not rule out that he posed a threat, police said.

It was said that he had attracted attention through threats against Swift and her partner Travis Kelce on the Internet, but neither the singer nor the concert-goers were in any danger at any time.

A court ordered the man to be detained until Saturday.

The concert on Wednesday was one of three concerts planned by the singer in Gelsenkirchen as part of her extremely successful “Eras” tour, at which 60,000 fans, affectionately called “Swifties”, sang, danced and celebrated in costumes, police said.

Swift will perform a total of seven shows in Germany over the next two weeks, including in Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg and Munich. She will conclude the European leg of the Eras Tour in August with a five-day performance in London.

During their concert on Wednesday, fans noticed Kelce, wearing a dark T-shirt and white cap, watching the Eras tour from a suite in the Veltins Arena.

The Gelsenkirchen performance is the Kansas City tight end’s 12th since he and Swift went public last September. He performed his first concert in Buenos Aires, Argentina, then in Sydney, two nights in Singapore, the last night in Paris, all three nights in London, one night in Dublin and two nights in Amsterdam.

After carrying Swift during her “Tortured Poets” performance in London last night, the football player said on his “New Heights” podcast with older brother Jason: “You guys have to keep showing up on the Eras tour to see if I jump off the stage or something.”
