Video shows Wisconsin police chasing suspects trying to flee in a U-Haul

Two suspects accused of armed robbery, shooting and premeditated murder were arrested in Wisconsin while attempting to flee in a U-Haul truck.

The suspects were arrested after a dramatic chase involving multiple agencies, including the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office, Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office and Omro Police Department, and the Interstate 41 ramp was blocked near Oshkosh, about 85 miles north of Milwaukee, the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Suspects involved in altercation and shooting

The chase occurred as the defendants attempted to flee after they were involved in an altercation and shot a 65-year-old man while buying a car from him at a car-buying facility in Omro, about 10 miles west of Oshkosh, Omro police said in a news release.

Authorities said the victim posted an ad on Facebook Marketplace to sell a car. The two suspects responded to the ad, and when they arrived at the victim’s location, an altercation ensued during which one of the suspects pulled out a firearm.

During the struggle for the firearm, the victim suffered a gunshot wound and other injuries, after which the suspects fled the scene in the U-Haul.

“They were quickly located by law enforcement and a multi-jurisdictional chase ensued,” Omro police said. “The pursuit ended in the city of Fond du Lac and the two suspects were taken into custody.”

The 65-year-old victim has since been taken to a local hospital; his injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Dashcam records chase

Dashcam footage captured and shared by the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office shows police vehicles pursuing the U-Haul driven by one of the suspects, eventually forcing the reversing vehicle to the side of the road.

Officers with the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office were notified of the incident and the “pursuit of a U-Haul box truck” at around 7:26 p.m. Monday, the sheriff’s office said.

Shortly after the alert, authorities and police vehicles began positioning themselves along I-41, the sheriff’s office said. “Officers began blocking access roads to their respective jurisdictions to limit the pursuit to the highway.”

A tire pressure reducer was also deployed, but the suspects were not deterred and continued to flee in their vehicle. A police squad followed the U-Haul, dodging “tire fragments that were detached from the rims as the flat tires ripped apart,” according to the sheriff’s office.

“Shortly thereafter, the U-Haul was running on rims only after all of its tires went flat,” the sheriff’s office said.

The suspects continued to elude police, and the driver put the U-Haul in reverse when it came across a police vehicle.

“When the police dog suddenly found himself nose to nose with the suspects and their vehicle, he knew he had to end the pursuit,” the sheriff’s office said. “He first bumped into the U-Haul and tried to get them to give up, but when the driver continued to attempt to back through the intersection, the police dog did what he had to do to end the pursuit and pushed the suspect’s vehicle through the intersection, turned it to the side and continued to push the U-Haul until it ran off the road.”

Officers, patrol officers and deputies then surrounded the vehicle and the “suspects eventually surrendered and were taken into custody.”

A loaded firearm was found inside the U-Haul, the sheriff’s office said.

Suspects arrested and charged

The two suspects were identified as Omah A. Brown, 45, of Milwaukee and Shakierra B. Ray, 27, of Green Bay. Brown was arrested for attempted first-degree premeditated murder, attempted robbery with violence, fleeing from an officer, possession of a weapon, motor vehicle theft and receiving stolen property.
