Since taking the city of Avdiivka in February, Russia has been carrying out heavy attacks in several sectors of the Eastern Front, including in Donetsk Oblast.

The commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian armed forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, said on July 2 that fighting in recent weeks had been particularly fierce around the town of Toretsk, about 25 kilometers south of Chasiv Yar.
