Mailboxes at northwest Houston office building broken into twice, leaving 3 dozen tenant mailboxes burglarized

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — The owner of a northwest Houston office building said cameras caught someone stealing mail from more than three dozen boxes.

A video from July 3 shows a man wearing a green shirt walking toward the mailboxes at the West 34th Street building just before 5:30 a.m.

He briefly disappears from the cameras, but when he reappears he is holding so much mail that he has to put it in a backpack.

The next day, cameras show the man returning with the same shirt.

This time, the video shows him holding something in his hand before playing with the mailboxes.

He is able to work on eight boxes at a time and then leave with more mail.

“Obviously he had a master key and he was able to open it and steal all the mail,” said attorney Larry Longer, who owns the building.

Longer forwarded the video to the Houston Police Department and the United States Postal Inspection Service.

HPD confirmed it received the surveillance footage, but could not say whether investigators had reviewed it yet. Because the man in the video has not been named a suspect, Eyewitness News has blurred his face.

In the meantime, Longer warns his tenants not to leave outgoing mail in the mailboxes, and he will ensure that they receive their incoming mail.

“We had the carrier just bring it to our office for the entire building, and then we spend our time delivering it ourselves to all the tenants,” he said, explaining his efforts.

Longer said he wasn’t sure whether he or his law firm had been the victim of mail theft, but he kept an eye out for anything suspicious.

“I monitor all my bank accounts. I have multiple bank accounts, so I have to manage a lot of checks and make sure they’re all cashed by the right people,” he said.
