The Lagos State Police said one of its officers had been arrested for allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl in his office.

The command’s spokesman, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Sunday, July 14.

According to the Nigerian news agency, the girl was the victim of an alleged brutal sexual assault by criminals while trying to recover her allegedly stolen phone.

The investigation revealed that the police officer in question, who had gotten wind of the theft of the phone, offered to help the girl find her missing phone after taking her statement.

It was also revealed that the officer, identified only as Owolabi, allegedly misled the teenager by giving him false information that police officers had arrested the suspected thief.

When he arrived at the office, he allegedly raped her at gunpoint.

The police chief has now ordered a comprehensive and thorough investigation into the allegations.

The Command assures the public that this is absolutely not a cover-up attempt as such heinous acts are contrary to the Nigerian Police Force’s code of conduct and professional ethics.

They assured that if the officer was found guilty, police regulations and the law would be followed.
