OSHP releases data on fatal accidents on July 4, seat belts a factor

According to a report from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, seven of the 16 fatal car crashes during the Fourth of July weekend were due to failure to wear a seat belt.

According to OSHP, a total of 16 people were killed in 15 motor vehicle crashes during OSHP’s Independence Day reporting period (Wednesday, July 3, through Sunday, July 7). Of nine deaths in which seat belts could have been used, seven of the fatalities were not wearing seat belts.

During the same reporting period, officers issued nearly 3,000 tickets for seat belt and child seat violations.

The death toll in 2024, at 16, is higher than last year, when there were 12 traffic fatalities during the same reporting period, according to OSHP data. This year’s death toll is identical to 2022, but lower than 2021, when there were 23 traffic fatalities.

State police also arrested 438 people for driving under the influence and 72 for drug offenses. Police also responded to 648 accidents and assisted 2,449 motorists.
