4 dead, 3 injured after mass shooting during 21st birthday party in Kentucky; suspect dies in hospital – WHIO TV 7 and WHIO Radio

FLORENCE, KY — Four people are dead and three injured following a mass shooting early Saturday morning in Florence, Kentucky, according to Florence police.

At approximately 2:51 a.m., Florence Police officers responded to reports of an active shooter at a residence on Ridgecrest Drive.

During a press conference on Saturday, Florence Police Chief Jeff Mallery said officers heard gunshots when they arrived, according to our media partner WCPO-9 TV.

Officers found seven victims at the scene. Two of the victims were outside the residence, WCPO-9 reported.

Four of the victims died at the scene, the remaining three were taken to UC Medical Center. Police said the hospital patients were in “critical but stable condition.”

Mallery identified the four victims as Shane Miller, 20, Hayden Rybicki, 20, Delaney Eary, 19, and Melissa Parrett, 44.

“Our deepest condolences and prayers go out to the families of the victims,” Mallery said.

According to WCPO-9, the shooting occurred during a party celebrating Parrett’s son’s 21st birthday.

Mallery said witnesses told police the suspect left the scene in a vehicle.

Officers spotted the vehicle near Farmview Drive and US-42 and attempted to make a traffic stop. The suspect drove away and officers pursued the vehicle.

The suspect fell into a ditch on Dale Heimbrock Way near Hicks Pike.

According to police, officers found a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the suspect.

The suspect was identified as 21-year-old Chase Garvey. He was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital, where he died.

Mallery said Garvey is a convicted sex offender, but police do not believe that has anything to do with the shooting.

Authorities do not believe Garvey was invited to the party, but that he was known to other guests, WCPO-9 reported.

The motive for this shooting is still under investigation.

“We’ve never seen anything like this before,” Mallery said. “I know it’s happening all over the country, but this is the first time Florence has seen a mass shooting.”
