Berkeley police are investigating a shooting that left one person dead on Wednesday.

Someone called police around 7:24 p.m. to report that “someone had been shot” in the 2900 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Berkeley police spokeswoman Officer Jessica Perry said in an email.

“Police arrived on scene and found a victim suffering from a gunshot wound,” Perry wrote. “Medical aid was rendered, including CPR, but unfortunately the victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.”

There had been no arrests as of Wednesday evening, Perry said.

When asked whether the shooting could have been a murder, an accidental shooting or something else, police did not immediately answer.

This was the first murder in Berkeley in 2024. There have been at least 16 shootings this year and six people have been injured.
