Former gangster identified as victim of New York traffic accident

(NewsNation) — The man killed in a collision with a New York Department of Transportation truck earlier this month was a mid-sized gangster, the New York Post reports.

Anthony Conigliaro, 86, was crossing a Brooklyn street on June 12 when he was struck by a truck and decapitated, police sources told the newspaper.

“He has spent his life looking over his shoulder, but he forgot to look left and right before crossing the street,” a police source said.

Conigliaro was known as “Tony Cakes” because he ran a wholesale cake business in his later years. His connection to the Genovese crime family became public in 2005 when prosecutors accused him of being a loan shark.

State records show that Conigliaro pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit organized crime and was sentenced to 13 months in prison.
