Three accused arrested in Bapatla rape and murder case

Vijayawada: Chirala police in Bapatla district on Saturday arrested three accused in connection with the rape and murder of a 21-year-old woman on Friday morning. The arrested were identified as Devarakonda Vijay (26), Karamki Mahesh (22) and Devarakonda Srikanth (24), all of whom live in the same village. According to SP Vakul Jindal, the three accused are addicted to alcohol and ganja. They noticed the victim near the railway tracks at 5.30 am on Friday morning. The accused dragged the victim to a nearby bush in an intoxicated state and raped her. Later, they strangled her. After getting convinced of the girl’s death, they fled the scene. The accused were arrested near a restaurant at Vodarevu in Bapatla on Saturday night. SP said the accused were involved in various crimes in the past. There are two cases against Vijay, one against Mahesh and three against Srikanth, all registered at Chirala police station. Jindal said the victim was unmarried. She had completed intermediate school and worked as a tailor from home. “She left home at 5.30 am on Friday but did not return home. Her family members searched for her and found her body near the railway track. They immediately called the police,” he said. After examining the body and the crime scene, the police registered a case of rape and murder. The forensic team collected the victim’s shoes, water bottle and clothes and sent the items for examination. “Five special teams are investigating the case,” the SP added. Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha visited the grieving family on Friday evening on the directions of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.
