Two more pit bulls have to be put down after the fatal attack on an 86-year-old woman from Calgary

Two pit bulls responsible for the death of an 86-year-old woman will be euthanized, a judge in Calgary decided.

Three American Staffordshire Terriers attacked Betty Ann Williams in the alley behind her house in June 2022.

One dog named Smoki has already been killed, but Rabie Ahmed, the dog owner’s lawyer, argued that the other two should be spared because there was no evidence that they were involved in the fatal attack.

On Thursday, Judge Bruce Fraser disagreed.

“All three dogs attacked Ms. Williams and were involved in her horrific injury,” Fraser said.

“These dogs should not be returned to the community as they pose a great risk and danger to the public,” Fraser said.

“An extremely terrible death”

Dog owner Denis Bagaric was visibly moved after Fraser announced his decision.

On June 5, 2022, Bagaric’s dogs – Bossii, Cinnamon and Smoki – escaped from his fenced backyard in the northwest community of Capitol Hill, the agreed statement of facts states.

Williams was attacked in a back alley where she was gardening. She suffered injuries all over her body, with the most serious injuries to her head, jaw, neck and face.

Fraser found on Thursday that Williams’ lip and ear were torn and her scalp was ripped open.

“Ms Williams suffered a terrible death,” the judge said.

In February, Bagaric pleaded guilty to two violations of Calgary city bylaws, was fined $18,000 and banned from owning pets for 15 years.

The case sparked a separate, independent investigation because 30 minutes passed from the 911 call to the arrival of paramedics who treated Williams.

The Health Quality Council of Alberta concluded that the first emergency call was incorrectly coded and did not appear to be life-threatening, resulting in response times that were twice as long as they should have been.
