Second suspect arrested in shooting at Sarasota hookah lounge

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – Another arrest has been made in connection with the Sarasota shooting that left Auburn running back Brian Battie fighting for his life.

Brian’s condition remains critical. If he survives, he faces the prognosis of permanent paralysis.

The shooting occurred at 3:30 a.m. on May 18 near the Marrakech Hookah Lounge. Six people were shot, including the suspect.

Brian Battie’s brother, Tommie Battie IV, was also killed in the shooting.

Suspect Darryl Brookins remains behind bars and is charged with murder, attempted murder and illegal possession of a firearm.

According to court records, Brookin’s girlfriend, Nicole Roberts, was arrested last Friday and also charged with aiding and abetting first-degree murder.

According to the affidavit, she left the scene in a rental car. Surveillance video shows a woman of similar build and stature to Roberts getting out of the car and throwing what is believed to be a firearm into the Manatee River.

The affidavit states that during a search of the river, detectives found a 9mm Glock firearm, believed to be the weapon used in the shooting.

Roberts’ detention hearing is scheduled for June 7. Brookins’ next court date is July 3.
