Man identified after fatal road rage incident in Clearfield

Police say a shooter has not yet been arrested in a road rage incident in Utah County that left a driver dead.

The man fatally shot was identified as 63-year-old James Edward Saccato of West Point.

The investigation began shortly before 6:30 p.m. Monday when dispatch was notified of a hit-and-run crash near Industrial Parkway and SR-193 in Clearfield.

Officials said the 911 caller was chasing Saccato, who was trying to elude the 911 caller.

The drivers drove into a residential area near 75 N 1000 W, where Saccato allegedly stopped in the middle of a residential street, got out of his vehicle and approached the 911 caller’s vehicle.

“This encounter ended in a shootout in which the driver of the fleeing vehicle died,” police said.

The 911 caller was arrested and cooperated with the investigation. Police said Staccato did not have a weapon on him.

Clearfield police said they will ask the county prosecutor’s office on Wednesday to consider filing any charges, which they do when the charges are not as clear-cut as in other cases.
