Two in custody after young police officer and passerby were shot on Arizona reservation

Two people are in police custody after a young police officer and a bystander were killed in a shooting during a dance on the Gila River Indian Reservation in Arizona early Saturday, authorities said.

The FBI is investigating how Officer Joshua Briese, who was still in field training, was shot and killed. The bureau confirmed Sunday that two suspects – an adult and a juvenile whose identities have not been released – are in custody and both are receiving medical treatment.

Another police officer was shot and is in “serious but stable” condition, according to police. Four others were also shot at the dance, one of whom died. The others are being treated at local hospitals, but their condition is unknown.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with these officers, their families and all those affected by this tragic incident,” the FBI said in a statement.

The Gila River Indian River Community Council announced on its Facebook page that it held a meeting on Saturday to declare a moratorium on dance events.

NBC affiliate KPNX in Phoenix spoke to someone who was at the dance. “It was scary. I was scared when I heard the shots, we all fell to the ground,” said the person, who wished to remain anonymous.

Police officers, lawmakers and community groups paid tribute to Briese. “Our thoughts and prayers are with these officers, their families and all those affected by this tragic incident,” Gila River police said on Facebook.

Gila River Indian Community Governor Stephen Roe Lewis said in a press release, “I know I speak for our entire community when I say we mourn our fallen and injured police officers and every community member affected by such tragic violence. Nothing hurts more deeply than a life ending prematurely.”

Briese’s father was Dave Briese, a deputy sheriff who died in a car accident in 2006, according to a post on the Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page.

“Knowing that Dave and Josh are back together, they both left this world serving their community and doing what they loved,” the post said.

The Arizona Trooper’s Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 32 said on X that the other officer shot was Briese’s field training officer.
