TEACHER ARRESTED FOR INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a former teacher at Henderson Hammock Charter School for inappropriate behavior toward a student.

On May 6, 2024, investigators arrested 38-year-old Johnathan Sheppard for inappropriately touching a student and sending inappropriate text messages during the 2023-2024 school year.

As a result of the investigation, Sheppard was suspended on April 11, 2024, and his employment was terminated by the school on April 19.

“This man’s despicable actions toward a student while holding the trusted position of a teacher are abhorrent.” Sheriff Chad Chronister said. “It is infuriating to know that someone responsible for the education and well-being of students is taking advantage of our most vulnerable, our children.”

Johnathan Sheppard faces the following charges:

During the investigation, investigators determined that the Hillsborough County Public Schools security officer assigned to the charter school, Theresa Cruz, 48, interfered with the school’s initial investigation into the allegations by providing details to Sheppard.

“This individual was trusted with the safety of students and violated that trust.” Sheriff Chronister said. “Her willingness to help this criminal means she will now face the grave consequences of her actions.”

Theresa Cruz was arrested and charged:

Investigators are asking if anyone believes they were a victim of Johnathan Sheppard. Please call HCSO at 813-247-8200.

This is still an active investigation. The Office of Public Affairs will post any updates.
