Man left covered in blood after seemingly unprovoked attack on VTA platform

(KRON) — A man was brutally attacked on a Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) train platform Wednesday, according to video released by the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office. The suspect was arrested and identified as 26-year-old Andrew Perez.

The attack occurred at around 1:12 p.m. at the VTA Children’s Discovery Museum station in downtown San Jose. In the video (above), the suspect can be seen walking up to the 45-year-old victim and punching and kicking him for over a minute.

When SCCSO officers arrived, they found the victim covered in blood from his head to his waist. He was taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries. He is now in stable condition.

Perez, who was wearing an armored vest, had fled the scene. He was later found and arrested in his own home near the crime scene after barricading himself inside.

The victim did not know Perez before the attack.

The victim told police he believed he had been attacked with a sharp weapon. He had a 20-25 cm cut on his forehead and cuts on his elbow and wrist.

“After reviewing video surveillance of the attack, the motion of the blows to the victim’s body indicates that Perez struck him with an unidentified weapon,” SCCSO said.

Perez was charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, possession of body armor during the commission of a felony and obstruction of safe transit operations.
