NFL writer questions if Von Miller remains on Buffalo Bills roster for entire season

It’s being touted as an impending decision, but a closer look suggests it’s generally not an issue for the Buffalo Bills.

Sports Illustrated’s Gilberto Manzano identified “the biggest decision” facing each of the AFC’s 16 teams and asked about the 35-year-old Von Miller.

Information systems Biggest AFC Team Decisions:

Biggest decision: What are they going to do with Von Miller?

Miller likely secured himself a spot on the Bills’ roster after taking a pay cut two months ago. But will that prevent the team from trading him before the Nov. 5 deadline? Another looming question will be whether the team still considers 35-year-old Miller as a starter after back-to-back injury-plagued seasons, he could have an opportunity to earn snaps and compete with AJ Epenesa, who struggled to find consistency.

Manzano accurately notes that Miller’s contract restructuring, which resulted in a pay cut last March, likely secured his place on the 2024 roster. Bills general manager Brandon Beane has publicly applauded Miller for his willingness to renegotiate.

“I thought Von did something that I don’t know and a lot of people would have done because he took less than he was guaranteed. Say what you want, whether you think he played level or not, he certainly did before the injury,” Beane said in March during league meetings. “I think Von will be more like the Von we know this year. He put the team first. He wants to win. He’s said that since the day he got here.”

As for trading Miller before the deadline, don’t expect a deal to ever come to fruition. If Miller returned to his pre-injury performance, the Bills would most certainly want him on the roster for the stretch stretch. If Miller continues to struggle, his trade value will be nonexistent.

Currently in voluntary OTAs, Bills head coach Sean McDermott has mentioned the benefits of Miller’s participation.

“Von spent some time away and he came back this weekend, and so yesterday I got a chance to see him there, which was good to see, working with his teammates, and the attitude of Von is always good, so it’s nice to have him around,” McDermott said.

Whether this will be his swan song from Buffalo remains to be seen, but all signs point to Miller staying with the Bills through the 2024 campaign.
