NBM praises Tinubu for suspending cybersecurity levy

The National President of the pan-African organization NBM of Africa, Olorogun Ese Kakor, has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for suspending the planned 0.5 percent cybersecurity levy on all electronic transactions in Nigeria.

Tinubu recently called on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to suspend the implementation of the controversial cybersecurity levy and ordered a review.

In a statement made available to journalists in Benin, Kakor commented on Tinubu’s directive and said the president’s decision was a right step in the right direction.

He said the President’s decision showed that he had heard the outcry of the people. If this policy had been allowed to continue, it would have led to further impoverishment of Nigerians.

Kakor described the president as “a listening, receptive and responsive person” who, in his opinion, was concerned about the affairs of the citizens.”

“What the President has done in calling for the suspension of the cybersecurity levy is highly commendable because we have known him for a very long time and we know that he is a listening, understanding and responsive person.

“That’s why I’m not surprised that he immediately ordered the suspension. Second, it’s good that the president acted, and we’re now going to go back to the drawing board and take another look at the law.”

“Cybercrime is undoubtedly an important part of security and therefore every government should consider an enabling law that would strengthen it and give more power to the institutions entrusted with this responsibility to ensure efficiency and combat the serious cybercrime that is ravaging the country and damaging our reputation as a country.

“We really want to commend the President for this. We also want to urge Nigerians to agree with the government that cybercrime laws need to be urgently improved,” he said.
