Teenager dies after river accident

A 17-year-old boy has died after being rescued from the River Nene.

Northamptonshire Police said Ronalds Abele got into trouble in the water on the bank in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, on Friday afternoon.

He was flown to Northampton General Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

Police described his death as a “tragic incident.”

Police said emergency services were called just after 1.45pm BST on Friday following reports of a teenager in the water.

A portion of the dam was cordoned off, surrounding roads were closed and boaters were barred from entering the area.

The Embankment is a popular riverside hiking and picnic spot.

Firefighters from Rushden and Irthlingborough and a specialist team from Mereway Fire Station assisted paramedics and police in rescuing the teenager.

After he was rescued from the river, the rescue helicopter took him to Northampton General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police said the teen’s family had “requested privacy at this very troubling time.”

Several bouquets of flowers were left on the shore in his memory.
