Nigerian lightweight boxer Cynthia Ogunsemilore has been provisionally suspended ahead of her opening bout at the Paris Olympics after testing positive for the banned diuretic furosemide. The International Testing Agency (ITA) announced the suspension on Saturday following an out-of-competition doping test conducted on Thursday.

The ITA has notified Ogunsemilore of the case and imposed a provisional suspension under the World Anti-Doping Code and the International Olympic Committee Anti-Doping Rules. This provisional suspension prevents Ogunsemilore from competing, training, coaching or participating in Olympic activities during the 2024 Games in Paris.

“The athlete has been informed of the case and provisionally suspended in accordance with the World Anti-Doping Code and the International Olympic Committee Anti-Doping Rules until the matter is resolved,” the ITA was quoted as saying by Reuters. “This means that the athlete will not be allowed to compete, train, coach or participate in any other activities during the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.”

The ITA also mentioned that Ogunsemilore has the right to appeal the provisional suspension before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) – Anti-Doping Division – and can request the analysis of her B sample.

Ogunsemilore, a Commonwealth Games bronze medallist and African Games champion, was scheduled to face Taiwan’s Wu Shih Yi in the round of 16 on Tuesday.
