2 Summerville SWAT team shot and injured in early morning incident

SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) – A man is facing charges for shooting at members of the Summerville SWAT team early Friday morning as they attempted to execute a search warrant, police said.

James Joseph Johnson is charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, possession of a stolen firearm, possession of body armor by a felon and possession of cocaine with the intent to resell, Summerville police said on their Facebook page.

Police called the department’s SWAT team to a home in the 200 block of North Maple Street around 6 a.m. after officers’ investigation led them to believe the home contained illegal narcotics and firearms.

Two SWAT officers suffered minor injuries from shrapnel, police said. Emergency services treated them on site.

Officers seized several firearms and illegal drugs in the house, police said.

Johnson was taken to the Dorchester County Detention Center to await a bail hearing.

A photo of him was not immediately available in the internment camp.
