UPDATE: 07:08 am — Traffic is moving again.

UPDATE: 6:07 a.m. — One lane is now open, but does little to ease the traffic jam.

UPDATE FROM FDOT: This is EAST/SOUTH BORDER and therefore affects traffic heading TOWARDS South Florida, NOT Southwest Florida.

BROWARD COUNTY, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — If you’re driving from Southwest Florida to Southeast Florida this morning, avoid Alligator Alley for the next few hours. A serious crash involving a semi-truck on southbound I-75 has caused traffic to back up since 5:30 a.m.

We don’t know about any injuries at this time, but traffic is backed up for miles on the way to the toll booths. The FDOT issued the following warning at 5:28 a.m.: “Accident involving a semi-truck in Broward County on I-75 South, past the toll booth. All lanes closed. Last updated at 5:28 a.m.”

Images from FDOT cameras show a huge line of waiting vehicles. Once you’re on Alligator Alley in the toll plaza area, there’s no realistic alternative. If you’re heading east from Southwest Florida this morning, consider heading north to Lake Okeechobee, then east, then south. That’s a long, long detour.

We encourage you to check FL511.com throughout the morning for breaking updates from the Florida Department of Transportation. We will also be updating BocaNewsNow.com.
