Northeast Houston family gets help from volunteers cleaning up home damaged by Hurricane Beryl

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A group of volunteers helped a northeast Houston family with cleanup efforts after being without power for 12 days following Hurricane Beryl.

The Bennett family sleeps on couches and sleeping bags, huddled together in the only room air-conditioned by a donated generator.

Volunteers from the Texas Gulf Coast Area Labor Federation and West Street Recovery helped clean up debris from Beryl in the yard, and a tree trimmer came to cut down some trees in the backyard.

Kenneth Bennett, who is disabled, told ABC13 Friday that because no trees physically hit their homes, their insurance claims were denied.

He and his wife Carolyn Ann care for four grandchildren.

Three trees in the garden of the family home fell, cutting electricity, gas and sewer lines, and another was about to fall.

Not to mention that Houston Mayor John Whitmire showed up at the family’s home.

CenterPoint officials sent this statement to ABC13 on Friday:

“We can confirm that the meter at 6331 Harmon has sustained damage. We cannot safely restore service until a licensed electrician makes the necessary repairs.”

The family is still waiting for CenterPoint to provide them with all the electricity they need.
