Braves select Caminiti in first round of MLB draft

The 6-foot-2, 195-pound left-hander was named a first-team All-American this year by Baseball America and the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA).. He was named the Gatorade Arizona Baseball Player of the Year for the 2023-24 season.

“It’s unbelievable,” Caminiti told ESPN after the selection. “It’s an unbelievable organization.”

The Braves have selected pitchers in the first round in each of the last five drafts. The club selected left-handed pitcher Jared Shuster in 2020, right-handed pitcher Ryan Cusick in 2021 and right-handed pitcher Hurston Waldrep in 2023, all college pitchers, while selecting prep right-handed pitcher Owen Murphy in 2022.

The Braves selected left-handed pitcher Carter Holton of Vanderbilt with their second pick, 62nd overall, on Sunday night.

The MLB draft continues Monday, with rounds 3-10, and Tuesday, with rounds 11-20.

Local connections

Among the local players drafted, James Tibbs III, an outfielder from Florida State and Pope High School, was selected by the San Francisco Giants with the 13th pick.
