Marion County man sentenced to at least 50 years in prison for raping woman

MARION, Ohio – A Marion County man was convicted last year of kidnapping, torturing and raping a woman.

According to Marion County Prosecutor Ray Grogan, 36-year-old Shane Hooper pleaded guilty to two counts of rape, two counts of kidnapping, two counts of aggravated assault and one count of strangulation.

Between May and June 2023, Hooper held a woman captive in her home. For several days, Hooper physically abused the woman, resulting in broken bones, open wounds, and eight broken ribs. He abused her with a baseball bat and a metal chain. Hooper nailed doors and windows shut to prevent her from escaping. In addition to the physical abuse, Hooper threatened to kill her and her family.

Hooper was caught when he tried to take the victim to another location on Silver Street in Marion, according to Grogan, but people noticed her distress and called police. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office took him into custody.

Hooper was sentenced to 50 to 55.5 years.
