Lakewood Church Opens as Safe Haven in Houston Area, Distributing Water, Fresh Air to Residents

HOUSTON – As storm clouds cleared, Tuesday marked the beginning of a difficult journey for many Houston families affected by Hurricane Beryl.

With widespread power outages and heat advisories in effect, residents are grappling with sweltering temperatures and a lack of essential supplies and services.

For this storm, Lakewood Church has opened its doors to Houstonians who might need a break.

The church set up a cooling center and distributed bottled water to help people after the storm.

Providing water and a cool place to relax is a lifeline for people, especially with temperatures hovering between 32 and 35 degrees. One resident expressed deep gratitude for the church’s support: “The storm was terrible, the winds were outrageous. But I thank God that the church is there, distributing water. We can’t survive without it,” he said.

Volunteers will be at the church to load water into visitors’ vehicles and greet people at the cooling center, which will remain open until 8 p.m.
